Luxembourg is easily reached from major European cities on cheap flights to LUX, HHN, and SCN, by train on discounted tickets from London, Paris, and Brussels, or by car.
Traveling to Luxembourg is easy from most major European cities and regions. Flights to Luxembourg Airport are not particularly cheap but driving and trains offer sensible alternatives.
Most, but not all, online reservation services recognize both the French Luxembourg and German Luxemburg spellings. In English, the French spelling is usually preferred.
Cheap Flights to Luxembourg
Flights are available from most major European cities to Luxembourg Findel Airport (LUX), which is conveniently located just minutes from downtown Luxembourg. Most flights are on the national carrier Luxair but other major European airlines such as British Airways, KLM, Austrian Airlines, and Swiss also have a presence at the airport.
Low-cost budget airlines do not fly to Luxembourg Airport. For cheap flights, alternative airports in Germany that are popular with low-cost airlines and within easy road access of Luxembourg include Frankfurt-Hahn (HHN) and Saarbrücken (SCN) Airports. Both airports’ parking lots generally sport many Luxembourg-registered cars although public buses are also available in addition to rental cars from all major car hire agencies.
Travel by Road to Luxembourg
By Car
Luxembourg is nestled in between Germany, Belgium, and France with highways in all three countries giving fast access to their small neighbor. Luxembourg city is just over 200 km (125 miles) from Brussels, Cologne (Köln), Frankfurt am Main, and Strasbourg, around 400 km (250 miles) from Paris, Amsterdam, Calais, and Zurich, and 500 km (375 miles) from Geneva, Munich, and London.
By Bus
Long-distance buses are generally not available to Luxembourg. However, frequent bus services run to Luxembourg City from nearby towns in France and Belgium but the most useful connections are to Trier, Bitburg, Saarbrücken, and Hahn Airport in Germany.
Travel by Rail to Luxembourg
Luxembourg can be reached by train most easily from its western neighbors, including London. The journey to Paris is particularly fast now that Luxembourg has been connected to the French high-speed TGV rail network. Trains to major German cities usually require transfers.
From London, travelers use the Eurostar from St Pancras International station to either Paris or Brussels. Travel times via either route are between five and a half and six hours – the transfer at Bruxelles-Midi station is less complicated than the transfer from Paris Nord to Paris Est station. Sometimes booking Eurostar and local European train tickets separately work out cheaper if travelers qualify for local discount deals.
From Paris Est to Luxembourg several routings are possible but it is worth timing journeys to coincide with a direct TGV that takes just over two hours. A few times per day, a TGV is available from Paris Charles de Gaul Airport to Lorraine from where a bus (reservations essential) can be taken to Luxembourg – this avoid having to transit via Paris itself.
From Strasbourg, Luxembourg can be reached in two to three hours – the twice-daily direct Euro-City train is the least complicated way to travel to Alsace.
From Brussels South (Bruxelles-Midi) at least hourly Inter-City trains run to Luxembourg in just over three hours.
From Frankfurt am Main, multiple changeovers are required – usually in Koblenz and Trier – for a journey taking around four hours.
The Luxembourg railways (CFL) have many special offers for cross border rail journeys if booked in advance. Reservations on TGV and Eurostar trains are compulsory but generally not required on Belgium or German trains.
Luxembourg is famous for its European Union and financial institutions but has many sights worth seeing. The fortifications and old town of Luxembourg was inscribed on the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list while the countryside is also surprisingly varied. The grave of Second World War leader General George S. Patton can be seen in the American Military Cemetery near Luxembourg Airport.
